Historical backtests · 2021–2025
Weekly predictions use only earlier results within each season, starting after three weeks. Both teams must have prior results. The same games evaluate the new weighting and the original equal-weight model. Margin error is measured against actual, unmodified scores.
| Season | Test games | Current FPI MAE | Original model MAE | Current FPI accuracy | Original accuracy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 1201 | 14.34 | 14.97 | 82.5% | 79.8% |
| 2022 | 1227 | 14.07 | 14.61 | 82.4% | 81.6% |
| 2023 | 1223 | 13.87 | 14.28 | 83.7% | 82.9% |
| 2024 | 1223 | 13.99 | 14.55 | 82.3% | 81.0% |
| 2025 | 1219 | 14.3 | 14.7 | 82.9% | 81.6% |
Historical teams come from each season’s game logs, including programs outside today’s 313-team roster. These retrospective comparisons do not establish calibrated coverage of the uncertainty ranges.
Across 6093 held-out games, the current FPI model has 14.11 points of average margin error and 82.75% winner accuracy. The original model has 14.62 points of error and 81.39% accuracy. Lower margin error and higher accuracy are better.
How to read FPI and how it is calculated
A team at +20 is rated 15 points stronger than a team at +5 on a neutral field. Add the estimated home advantage to the home team’s margin. Schedule strength is the average FPI of opponents in the games used.
The model fits scoring margins using one rating per team and a shared home advantage. Each game counts once; mirrored team logs are deduplicated. Ratings use the previous season’s independently fitted FPI as a modest prior, alongside shrinkage toward average. Current-season results gain influence as games accumulate. The previous season is fitted from its own scores without recursive carryover; new programs start with an average-strength prior. No Sagarin, Massey, or CalPreps rating enters the calculation. Current-season fitting uses games between the 313 roster teams. Outside opponents do not affect this season’s fit. The prior-season FPI remains the independently calculated score-based estimate used in the backtest.
Only completed games on or before the cutoff are used. Forfeits and games with unknown venues are excluded. 1 source rows excluded in this build. Rated-game counts can differ from official records. Teams without eligible games depend on the prior; teams without a previous-season match start at average strength before centering.
The supplied interstate database is archived and reconciled. The selected model excludes outside-roster games from current-season fitting after historical comparison favored the Indiana core. Official records still include all games.
This is an experimental scoring-margin model. Games have full weight through a 84-point margin, then weight decreases as 84 divided by the absolute margin. A 168-point game receives half weight. Margins themselves are not capped. Sparse connections between schedules and large wins can affect statewide rankings; ratings are not championship probabilities. This is an independent project model, unaffiliated with ESPN.
Rolling evaluation: 907 games, starting after three calendar weeks. Each evaluation week is predicted using only earlier games, and both teams must have prior results. Mean absolute margin error: 14.6 points; home-advantage-only baseline: 29.13 points. Winner accuracy: 86.2%. These are current-season checks; completed-season comparisons appear above.
Uncertainty uses an approximate Gaussian posterior with the full weighted schedule matrix, home-field parameter, and both the average-strength and previous-season prior penalties, centered on the 313-team mean. Residual variance is estimated using effective model degrees of freedom. The previous-season prior is treated as fixed; its estimation error is not propagated. Ranges are conditional on these assumptions and do not account for injuries, systematic bias, or changing team strength.
