Was the coverage of Louisville’s Kevin Ware’s injury appropriate?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard or seen (yikes) University of Louisville men’s basketball player Kevin Ware’s gruesome injury … Don’t worry, I won’t be posting a picture of the injury or how it happened. The game in which the injury occured was played in Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium and Ware was treated at Methodist Hospital, which also treats patients of Indianapolis 500 wrecks.

But, more to our point. How did the media — CBS and subsequent coverage — handle and cover situation? Were they too cautious? Could they have blurred his injury? What obligations does the media have in these situations and what should consumers of media expect?

Evansville’s only beat writer for NCAA Division I basketball, Jonathon Lintner of the Evansville Courier & Press was kind enough to offer his insight and reactions. Lintner has been awarded for his coverage of Division I sports by Scripps-Howard, The C&P’s parent company.
